Thou Shall Not Pass – The One Thing You Can Do To Secure Your WordPress Site

If you are using WordPress to create your sites then you need to address security at some point.

It doesn’t matter how small your site is, you are still at risk.

When it comes to WordPress security, size definitely doesn’t matter. Continue reading

Thou Shall Not Pass – The One Thing You Can Do To Secure Your WordPress Site

Why Would Anyone Be Interested In My Site?

Good question. The problem is that most of us can’t think like someone who would willingly hack into a site so we can’t understand their motives.

Imagine for a moment that your site is successful. I’m not talking Amazon successful, I mean you make, say, a few hundred dollars a month through affiliate links.

You’ve done all the hard work of setting up the site, publicising it, maybe you’ve done SEO work or possibly paid for an SEO service.

And now your hard work is finally paying off as visitors click on your affiliate link and you earn commission on that sale.

That’s a pretty sweet deal isn’t it?

Now imagine that someone replaced your affiliate links with their own. They haven’t put in all the effort you have, all the hours and money, yet they are profiting from your work.

Hmm, that’s a pretty poor show!

There are many worse reasons why someone might want access to your site. If a hacker was using your site for illegal activities, who’s door do you think the authorities will come knocking on first?

“Sorry Officer, I have no idea how those pirate video files ended up on my site.”

Listen Everyone, We Are Moving To Defcon 1

Before you lock yourself in to your panic room, I have exaggerated to make a point but these issues are not rare enough you can ignore them.

Thankfully, there is one thing you can do to prevent the majority of hacking attempts.

No, it’s not to install a security plugin. You can install a security plugin such as WordFence  (which I have personally done), but it will not have as big an impact on your site’s security as this one piece of advice.

The majority of security plugins monitor for suspicious activity but they can only prohibit this activity at a basic level such as block an IP address.

Are You Ever Going To Tell Me What It Is, I Could Be Being Hacked Whilst You Drone On!

Thou Shall Not Pass – The One Thing You Can Do To Secure Your WordPress Site

If you are setting up a new WP site, do not call the admin user ‘ADMIN.

If you have an existing site with a user called ‘admin,’ create a new user with administrator rights and a different name. Then delete the ‘admin’ user.

Make the name of the admin user as hard to guess as the password!

That Sounds Too Simple

It is simple but extremely effective.

If you doubt me, install a security plugin such as WordFence and review the history of logins. You will see plenty of entries like this:

An unknown location at IP XX.XX.XXX.XX attempted a failed login using an invalid username “Admin”.

So I’ve Changed the Admin User and My Site Is Secure Now

Not so fast. You are now protected against the most common type of attack on a WP site but you are not totally in the clear.

The sad fact is that if a genuine hacker wants to get into your site, you can only delay them or slow them down.

Installing a plugin that monitors suspicious activity will help but it will not necessarily stop it.

There are many more detailed (and sometimes confusing) articles on the internet about WordPress security. A Google search will find them for you.

I have only explained how to protect yourself from the most common type of brute force attack.

Summary

People’s sites being hacked is still a rare occurrence but it pays to be vigilant. Perform these two simple steps to reduce the risk to your sites:

  • Change the name of the admin user to anything other than ‘admin’
  • Install a security plugin to monitor suspicious activity

7 Keys to Nurturing Your Sales Lead List – A Communication Plan

As an entrepreneur you know, the value is all in your list. The first goal is to generate leads and create a list. The second is nurturing your list. Your goal is to build a relationship with your list and to maintain a lifelong relationship with your list, so that you can monetize it.

So how do you do that? It’s all about coming from your Core and being authentic, but let’s look at how to accomplish what’s called a Communication Plan: Continue reading

7 Keys to Nurturing Your Sales Lead List – A Communication Plan

1. Introduce yourself. Let people know who you are and what you are about. Think of introducing yourself as you would in a social setting. Upon first being introduced to someone at a party, or even a business function, you wouldn’t try to close a sale. It’s abrupt and offensive and even if you find it to be OK, you will turn people off, which means no conversion, no sale.

2. Let people get to know you. Invite people to get to know you on social sites. Bring them back to your hub, usually a blog. Remember you are in this for the long haul and this is about relationship building. Think of it as you would building any other good, strong, relationship. Keep how you would interact with a new friend in the back of your mind.

3. Maintain contact. Send periodic, consistent emails through an autoresponder such as Aweber or GetResponse. And by consistent I mean not only at consistent intervals, but with a consistent branding message. Don’t confuse people. Conduct webinars or submit blog/video posts on a regular basis. And as the technology becomes more mainstream, implement mobile communication.

4. Be consistent in your message. As part of your branding you should have developed a message. One of the most concise overviews of your message will be your “elevator speech”. This is a short 30-60 second, blurb about your target market, your offering, your benefits and your unique selling proposition (USP). What you say will expand on your blurb, but never deviate from this. If you find yourself deviating, you’ve gone off point or you need to rethink your positioning.

5. Engage your list. Communication, is not a one way street. It includes listening. Two way communication builds connection. When people feel connected to you, they are more likely to buy from you. Social sites, a blog with comments, and live webinars are great ways to create interaction. Even so, most of your list will never respond to you directly, so create nonverbal, engagement with your list. Make your communication provoking, get them thinking about you, even if they’re not directly responding. Keep them looking forward to your next email, post or webinar.

6. Provide value. Don’t be afraid to give away a part of what you have to offer. There are many reasons that it will come back to you two-fold, such as the law of reciprocity, but there is nothing more authentic and genuine than sharing something of value to build a relationship. Think of it as you would your friend sharing a tip about a great restaurant.

7. Radiate gratitude. Yes, it is true that people connect with someone that can feel their pain, but who wants to hang with someone that is a bummer to be around all the time. What better way to connect than to let everyone know the things in your life, both personal and business-related for which you are thankful. It’s a sincere way to toot your own horn, but most importantly, it’s hard not to radiate positive energy when expressing gratitude.

One of the most important things about building a following (your list) and leadership is connection. When you think about your communication plan, think about how you would build a relationship with a friend. Would you just call them only when you want something from them? Would you push something on them before you had formed some type of connection, or trust?

Let me know what works best for you in your communication plan. I’d love to share it with others!

Choosing an Autoresponder That Fits You and Your Business Needs

Deciding on an autoresponder that fits just what you need for your business can be a very overwhelming job. There are a ton of different ones to choose from on the Internet. The features and prices of each will vary so you need to consider your budget and what features you need for your business to run smoothly. Having those two things figured out before hand will help you to narrow down your choices. There are several things you will need to take into consideration when deciding on an autoresponder that is right for you. The best thing to do in this case is to compare them by features, price, and brands to see which offers exactly what you need. Continue reading

Choosing an Autoresponder That Fits You and Your Business Needs

If you run a business online, then an autoresponder is greatly needed. Many of us are already aware that an autoresponder is a program that sends automated replies via email to those that opt into it. Usually responses back from autoresponders are short and straight to the point. These messages can range from pretty much letting you know that a person is taking a vacation to simply informing you that they have received the message you sent them.

If you are in the Internet marketing industry, it’s best to have a sequential autoresponder that will allow you to specify the number of days in between each pre-determined message you want sent to your subscribers.  (I, personally, am using  Getresponse ..banner to right)..

Using a sequential autoresponder the right way will bring you back more visitors in the long run. If you have a ton of clients or subscribers, this will be a lifesaver. You will be able to keep track of all of your subscribers and keep them up to date as to what is going on with you and your business at any given time.

If you do some research online, you will find that there are several different types of autoresponders available. There are those that are web based programs and some are that are scripts. There are even those programs that you are able to run on your own personal computer or server. Autoresponders are a KEY part of your online business. With that being said, you definitely want to put in the effort and time to choose the one that’s best for you. This will save you both time and the unnecessary headache in the long run.

Choosing an Autoresponder That Fits You and Your Business Needs

The three main types of autoresponders consist of: desktop hosted, remote hosted, and locally hosted. Desktop hosted ones will give you the ability to run the program on your own computer. Remote hosted autoresponders are those that are usually on someone else’s website and/or server. And then the locally hosted autoresponder will let you work with a program that can be used on your own server. So be sure to get a full understanding of what each one offers before making a choice. Some may not even offer the features that you need for your business.

SEO optomizing..More info on higher ranking in Google

Getting a lot of Google traffic is challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding, especially if you experience an increase in sales. Traffic from the search engines is called ‘organic traffic’ because it occurs naturally. It involves the search engines’ spiders ‘reading’ your website’s content to determine its subject matter. The goal of SEO is to make your website as ‘readable’ as possible for the SEARCH ENGINES. Continue reading

SEO optomizing..More info on higher ranking in Google

There are certain SEO strategies you can implement today which will allow the search engines to quickly determine the topic of your website, and increase the number of visitors. The main thing you have to keep in mind is Google wants to send traffic to the most relevant websites available when a user types a search term into its box.

Focus on the word ‘relevant‘ because it is important. All the SEO strategies mentioned in this article are designed to increase the relevancy of your website for your keywords. After you’ve optimized your site you’ll notice an increase in Google traffic in a couple months. Be patient. Your website will rise in the rankings, but you have to give the search engines time to re-crawl your website then re-index the new pages.

First, you have to make sure each of your website’s pages contains a title tag. You can find the title tag in each web page’s HTML code. The tag will look like this: Your Keyword Here. Make sure to insert your page’s main keyword as close to the beginning of the title as possible because the title tag is the first place the search engine will visit to determine the subject of the page.

Secondly, you want to make sure you insert at least one H2 tag with a keyword inside. If you don’t want to rewrite the old pages on your site, try to insert an H2 tag inside every new page you create. An H2 tag is a subheading and it is the second place Google turns to when its robot crawls your pages. H2 tags also ‘break up’ the text on a web page so it’s easily digestible, and they help to increase a page’s quality score.

You also want to insert pictures or videos into your web pages. Google will send you a lot of traffic if you can prove your website provides value to its users. Pictures are extremely important and Google will place more value on pages with pictures than those without multi-media content. Make sure you insert your keyword in the picture’s ‘alt tag’. Google’s bot will read a picture’s alt tag to determine what the picture is about so it’s important to make sure the picture is relevant, and that it contains a keyword in the alt tag.

Another powerful SEO strategy which will increase your Google traffic is to name the picture by using one of your keywords. For example, don’t upload a picture that’s named ‘pic 1’. Instead provide a descriptive name with a keyword before you upload the pic. This is important because your content management system will create a separate URL for the picture as soon as you upload it and having a keyword in the name, will increase your chance of the picture itself getting traffic from Google Images.

If you’re going to use a video, make sure the video title has a keyword as well. Google will look at the video’s title to determine its relevancy so this is an important step. You can insert an H2 tag with a keyword above the video as an introduction to the content.

Finally, you can use bullet lists and bold and italic text to help increase your pages chances of appearing in the SERPs. Here again, Google’s bot places more emphasis on bullet lists and on words that are bolded or italicized. Those words add value to the text and make it easier for the reader to understand the content.

SEO optomizing..More info on higher ranking in Google

As long as you think about adding value to the reader by offering quality content that’s easy to read, you’ll get a lot of Google traffic. Focus on creating web pages with the SEO strategies mentioned in this article and within a couple months you should notice an increase in your traffic stats.

Making money online secret?!?! PATIENCE!!

I received this post in an E-mail from a fellow named Brian Rooney…and I believe it is one of the most important things to remember if you are actually, honestly, trying to finally succeed in earning money online. I decided to re-print it here…hope you enjoy it, and remember…no-one really fails on the internet marketing scene…they either succeed, or quit…that is it!!  (The reference to Bob Seger is mine)

The Role of Patience in Network Marketing

Nov 05 2012

I’ve noticed a disturbing trend among folks that call themselves “network marketers”. Somewhere along the line, people are starting to get the expectation that network marketing, whether done online or offline, is a matter of opening an account with some flashy program, and then just waiting for the money to come rolling in hand over fist. These are the same people that bounce from one program to another, trying this one, trying that one, and never sticking with any of them long enough to actually learn how to succeed.

They read an article or see a video of someone that seems to be experiencing quick success and think, “I’ll be rich in 30 days! All I have to do is sign up with this ‘guru’!”. Continue reading

Then, when the riches don’t sweep them out of their living room in 30 to 90 days, they are off looking for another “program”. They blame the company. They blame the compensation plan. They blame their upline. But no matter what company they join, their results are always the same. It’s time to realize that if you have joined opportunity after opportunity and you haven’t succeeded with any of them, the common denominator is YOU!

Listen, there are people out there that are able to generate an income very quickly in network marketing. Companies love to share those stories with us. They’re exciting and they intentionally get us all pumped up.

What you may not be considering is the rest of the story. That person that is now a multimillionaire may have been bankrupt a few years ago. These same people have usually spent a lot of years building a solid reputation, generating their marketing lists, developing their skill sets, working on their own personal development, and establishing their credibility. What you see, now, is that they are able to quickly tap in to a large network that they have probably built over the past several years.

It may have taken them 10 years or more to get to the point that they now seem like an overnight success story.

Being a musician, I follow music and musicians regularily, and I remember an interview once with Bob Seger, just after he FINALLY  “Made it”   he said…”I finally became an overnight success…it just took me ten years to do it”

The problem that I’m seeing comes in to play when a complete rookie signs up for a network marketing company and then thinks they are going to be able to, all-of-a-sudden, start generating wads of cash overnight. They typically have no marketing experience, no list, no credibility, no successful track record and they seem really confused when their bank doesn’t call them to ask what to do with the hundreds of thousands of new dollars that just  magically appeared in their bank account.

It’s Time To Wake Up!

Success in network marketing comes down to following a few proven success principles consistently over time.

If you are new to the industry …
If you have never made more than $20,000 – $30,000 a year …
If you have never generated more than a few hundred dollars per month in any business opportunity …

Making money online secret?!?!  PATIENCE!!

You need to understand that there is going to be some time involved before you should expect to see a ton of money coming in. You’ve got some new things to learn. And that’s OK! The right upline can teach you a proven system to help you reduce the time required to learn but you are absolutely going to have to learn some new things if you want new results in your life!

No matter which company you join (provided you have joined a LEGITIMATE company), you are going to need to learn and implement the skills, tools, and techniques being used by the successful people in the industry.

Success can be influenced by things like timing, the right opportunity, a great product, etc…

Ultimately, your success will always come down to YOU making a solid and consistent commitment to take the right actions in the right ways over time.

I have seen people sign up for a network marketing opportunity, give it a month or two and then just quit. They say things like “It just didn’t work for me” or “I gave it my best shot” or “I”m just not cut out for this stuff”. They quit instead of commit to learning what it is they are missing.

I’ve also seen that same person’s downline seem to explode because someone else that was on that same team decided to learn and apply the skills required to succeed! If the person that quit had just been a little more patient and taken the time to learn some new skills, their income would have exploded, too!

Time For Some Truth Talk:

If you are thinking things like, “Well, I’ll give it a try” or “Let’s see what happens” or “I hope this thing works” … you are setting yourself up for failure.

There is plenty of evidence. We have no shortage of stories, testimonials, and documented evidence to indicate that success in network marketing is absolutely possible.

The decision you have to make is whether or not you can commit to doing whatever is necessary to create that sort of success for yourself. That sort of commitment requires a “never quit … no matter what” attitude. Your commitment to yourself and your own success will determine how far you go in this industry.

I’ve seen people with multiple college degrees do well in this industry.

I’ve seen people with no more than an elementary school education level do well in this industry.

I’ve never seen anyone actually fail in this industry. They either succeed or they quit!

Network marketing is the great equalizer. The variable is you. How dedicated are you to your own success? Commit to making it happen.

The results are well worth it!

The Definition and Significance of Branding

If you have ever made a choice between two similar products (like Nike vs Adidas or Ford vs Toyota), odds are you’ve encountered their branding and it helped effect your purchase. For every business, branding is crucial to developing a strong marketing plan and helping the company to grow. If you have a business or plan to start one, this article will cover some of the basics of branding and why it’s so important for your organization. Continue reading

The Definition and Significance of Branding

Branding is defined by the American Marketing Association as a “name, term, sign, symbol or design, or a combination of them intended to identify the goods and services of one seller or group of sellers and to differentiate them from those of other sellers.” But a brand is so much more than this. A strong brand in truth is the personification of a company, the gut feeling a person gets about a product, service or organization.

Let’s look at an example… how about Apple? What adjectives or feelings come to mind when you think of this organization. The most frequent words associated with Apple are innovative, advanced, cutting edge, cool. You can see how this helps to give them an advantage over their competitors. Apple doesn’t necessarily have to be better to get more business – they just need to continue to project this brand, this personification of their company, and people will continue to spend oodles of money on their products.

So how do you create a solid brand? Well it’s a combination of things like the business or product name, a logo, marketing materials and developing a consistent look in your marketing pieces, your packaging, how you present yourself, even how you dress. Every way potential clients can interact with your business is an opportunity to develop your brand. A strong brand will also help you attract the right clients, which in turn will help you create a strong brand and grow your business.

You  spent a great deal of time coming up with your business name and logo, along with whatever product(s) you are involved in, and then used that to build your overall look. By doing this, You are able to attract your ideal clients and establish yourself as  unique  in the community.

As you can see, the key to creating a thriving business starts with developing a strong brand. Whether it’s through your business name, logo, products or perceived identity in the community, your brand will help define your company and enable you to reach greater heights!

How to Get Your Website to Come Up First in Search Results Using SEO

seo-blog

If you have been trying to rank your website on search engines without results, there are a few things you can do to speed up the process. The below tips will not guarantee results, but you will certainly be able to find a way to get your website come up first in search results sooner or later. Continue reading

Obviously, search engine optimization is a long term process, and you will need to build up a complete strategy, especially if you are looking to beat a strong competition. Still, it is possible to rank a site on first page; all you need is an analytical mind, a positive mindset and loads of time.

How to Get Your Website to Come Up First in Search Results Using SEO

1. Check the Current Ranking

Before you are starting to work on your website’s SEO ranking, it is time to check where you are standing for the desired keywords. There are many online tools called “rank checkers” or SEO analysis pages you can use for free that will give you the information you need in order to work on the site. Find out what is your average position for the keywords first of all.

2. Install Google Analytics

In order to find out more about your visitors and organic traffic sources, you need to add Google Analytics code to the site. If you have a WordPress blog, you can install the plugin and it will start communicating with search engines, giving you the statistics you need regarding incoming searches.

3. Check the Site’s Keyword Density

There are plenty of keyword density checkers online you can use to determine how you are standing for the given search phrases. If the density is less than one percent, you need to include the phrases more often in the posts using (but not over-using) emphasis like bold, underlined, italic or subtitle formatting.

4. Review Keywords

Once you have decided which keywords you would like to rank for, find out more about the competition. Simply typing the phrases into the search box you can see how many results there are. Review the sites on the first page to see what their page rank and backlink status is, using free SEO analysis. If they are all authority sites, go for a long tail keyword version.

5. Choose Long Tail Keywords

It is possible to rank for long tail keywords and still make enough money with your site from organic search. If it seems impossible to rank for the main keyword, find some longer phrases containing the original one and target that one. If you pick a few, you will see that your ranking will improve radically.

6. Build Relevant Contextual Backlinks

Once you have changed your website content and targeted the long tail keywords on your site, it is time to build contextual links. This can be done through article marketing, guest posts, forum or blog signatures, but be aware of spamming sites. Only use services that are relevant to your topic and avoid automatic submissions.

How To Blog, Great Blogging Advice

How To Blog

Do you want to be a blogger? It is an interesting choice for anyone wanting to express themselves and perhaps develop a second income. A good second income and perhaps even a first income is possible if you start with the right plan. Continue reading

Your most fundamental decision is what you want to blog about. It must be something that people are interested in reading about but more importantly something that you are interested in, perhaps even passionate about.

Make no mistake, while blogging can be very rewarding, at times it can be hard work as well and these are the times that your passion can help see you through.

You also want to be sure that your topic is big enough for you. A very narrow topic may not allow you to produce regular content to keep your blog fresh. Fresh content always attracts more readers and return readers and so it is very important. Your blog topic is your first and most important decision.

Which Blogging Platform Should You Use

WordPress is the recommended platform for creating your blog. You can always find people to help you with it. It is the most common blogging platform on the web today. It is easy and inexpensive to set up. There are plenty of inexpensive options out there for you.

Your domain name is the next decision after picking your topic. It is always appropriate to use your own name or a variation on it. This causes you to be promoted and ultimately as a blogger that is important. It may also be that you want to pick a name related to your topic this is also commonly done. Of course a topical name locks you in more than a blog based on your name. If you base your blog domain on your name you’ll have more freedom to change up subjects.

You register a domain name at companies like Namecheap, Godaddy, Netfirms and others. Your name must be unique and these companies will do a free search so you can locate a name that is unique.

After your domain name you will want to find hosting for your blog. Hosting is a computer connected to the internet where all of your information is stored. Some great companies are Hostgator and Bluehost. You can Google them and find information on their plans and prices. After you acquire a domain name and hosting you simply tie the two together and you are off. All of these companies have simple installers that will install the WordPress platform for you. It is not a difficult process but often beginners can use a little help putting these pieces together. You should make inquiries of the hosting companies to see if they can help. If not you can turn to fiverr.com for some cheap help.

What Next?

The same things that will make you successful in any area of life are required to succeed at blogging. Patience, perseverance, and just plain guts. Take action to get started and don’t look back. If you are interested it is something that you can be successful at. It really is that Simple.
